The Orange County Airport Area
Located in Orange County, Costa Mesa, California is located near Newport Beach; about 9 miles west of Irvine and 7.7 miles southwest of Santa Ana. Once a partly rural farming community, the city has evolved into a commercialized suburb anchored by retail and light industrial.
Present day Costa Mesa was originally settled by two Native tribes. Europeans began exploring the area after the Spanish expedition of Gaspar de Portola in 1769 at which point the area was named Vallejo de Santa Ana. The first permanent settlement would take place in November of 1776. 62,500 acres of land; originally granted to Jose Antonio Yorba by the Spanish Empire, makes up Costa Mesa and several other notable communities.
The state of California would become part of the U.S. after the Mexican-American war; followed by the arrival of the first American settlers to the area where they formed a town called Fairview. A major flood would destroy the railroad system and the Costa Mesa area would become the go to. Santa Ana became a training ground for World War II soldiers at Santa Ana Army Air Base, and many would make it their permanent home; resulting in a population spike after World War II.
